The Most Meaningful Gifts This Holiday Season

General No Comments »

We’ve said that it would never happen again…frantic last minute shopping, insurmountable to do lists that bring us to the edge of collapse and a mound of wrapping paper piled so high that we can’t see over it. We’ve said we’d simplify, scale back and realize the beauty and true calling of the season. But then somehow when the bugle blew the day after Thanksgiving, we were off to the races!

How do we slow the pace down and create a memorable season? There is so much we want to do for our loved ones yet it’s easy to become so automated and rushed in our movements that we miss the present. Without staying mindful, beautiful moments can easily rush past without us giving us an opportunity to fully experience their richness.

We’d like to but how can we realistically slow down when there’s so much to do? How can we stay in the moment and be mindfully aware of the true gifts of the holidays? Follow these three suggestions to bring the most meaning to yourself and others:

1. Gift your gratitude. Bring to mind a loved one and feel the joy the relationship brings to you. Think of the tender moments you’ve shared. Instead of taking time to buy another impermanent object, take time to sit down and write a letter expressing why you’re grateful they are in your life. Be as specific as possible and include examples that are unique to them. Make sure your letter is on beautiful archival quality stationary so that it can be cherished forever.

2. Communicate the gift that will be your life story. When most people look at the task of sharing their legacy they can be overwhelmed with the seeming enormity of the task. However, the best memoirs are not chronological and don’t include all of life’s details. Choose the most significant events that have shaped your life and explain why they are important to you. Commit to just a few paragraphs every day and when you have a pile put them in the order that makes the most sense for you. You’ll start to see a pattern emerge that you can compile into a larger body of work to give as a unique and heartfelt gift that will be treasured long after the holidays are over.

3. Give the gift of your time and service as a stand alone gift or in exchange with others. Look at where people need help in the day to day aspects of their life and lend support. Offer your help depending on where people are in their lives. Perhaps mothers can use an hour or two of your in-house help to watch the kids as they get some needed things done. Maybe a senior can use the gift of your labor to have some work done around their house. As we tune into the specific needs of others, we realize that there are numerous opportunities to help those we care about lighten their loads.

When we focus on giving the gift of ourselves through sharing our gratitude as well as our lives, our time and our service; the most valuable things become crystal clear. At the same time, the lesser things fall away. Ultimately, when we act on what is most important to us, we make room for true meaning and have more time to enjoy the beauty of the season.

How to Plan Your Christmas Gifts

General No Comments »

Give yourself at Christmas; there really is no more wonderful of a gift. Out of the pretty box you give can fly all sorts of rare intangibles, once the ribbon is off and the lid is lifted. Affection, nostalgia, laughter, shared memories all these can crackle in the tissue paper along with grace and generosity. I was watching, a gift can say: last summer I could see you needed a better tennis racket. I was listening, a gift can tell: I heard you say you liked old cars… or Beethoven… or adventure stories.

The art is to put into every package more than the gift itself. We should think to ourselves that any gift will rattle around in any box unless the box is stuffed with human values, with joy and smiles and loving-kindness. Put yourself in every Christmas package.

Christmas Comes But Half the Year

Stretch your Christmas shopping out a bit: if you see something in September that’s just right for somebody, buy it or order it; Christmas will always come along, every year.

Keep your eyes open all during the year, during sales, off-seasons, general shopping, for the odd, delightful, pertinent gifts that are so meaningful at Christmas; buy them, tag them, and store them away.

When you travel during the year, anywhere, buy for Christmas gifts as well as for souvenirs.

Think well in advance of the gifts that take a whole year to accomplish: a year’s collection of the college newspaper for a son at an Army camp; pictures taken the same day of every month of the new baby, for grandparents far away, to be given in an album.

Have a notebook or card index to jot down hints during the year of things that other people would like; be alert to the wishes expressed idly by your family and friends.

Well ahead of the holiday make whatever discreet inquiries are necessary about size or taste, etc.

Mark a calendar for the days when materials for fruitcake, etc. need to be purchased; have some foolproof reminder for whatever takes many weeks before Christmas to do.

Investigate Christmas Clubs, and decide whether they suit your family’s buying and spending habits.

Giving To Children

Consciously take notes during the year; many a real desire is forgotten or overlooked by the child in the dazzle of Christmas stores.

Take the children with you, once, early in the shopping season, to the biggest store in your city; say that it is not a trip to buy, and stick to it. Let it be just for looking, and allow time for the children to see and think about everything they see.

For very young children, do not buy for Christmas a gift that is out of season; a fishing rod he longed for at the beach last August will have little meaning for the very small boy when he sees it under the tree at Christmastime.

Avoid at all costs the gift a child is not yet ready for; a stamp album given half a year too soon may set up boredom where a little later a lasting interest might have developed.

Wrap everything. Wrap lots of little presents, too, and disguise packages that might be obvious. Under no circumstances tease the child by withholding the one present he has counted most on, if you have bought it for him.

If there is not time to set up a complicated toy on Christmas morning, put it away somewhere safely until that can be done; many a fine gift does not survive the early hours, and pieces are stepped on or thrown away accidentally, and directions are lost.

If there are children of different ages, take pains to protect all their gifts from each other’s ravages, and to protect the younger children from harm.

Try to include in every child’s Christmas a gift for the day itself, such as a Christmas book to be read or a record to be played.

With a little thought and planning, Christmas gift-giving can be as rewarding for the giver as the recipient.

Wacky, Weird, Whimsical Christmas Gifts For Mom

General No Comments »

It is that time of the year again, when gifts are received and given in a flurry of hugs and kisses, festivities and feasts, stress and laughter. But even with all the harried and hurried Christmas shopping, you must never forget to give Christmas gifts for Mom!

However, your gifts need not be the usual diamond jewelry, expensive home d?cor, leather designer items and haute couture dresses. Instead, you can choose to make your Mom laugh with your unique choice of gifts this Christmas. Why not try these ideas of Christmas gifts for Mom this year?

The Albert Einstein of the House

Remember how you and your siblings used to drive your mom crazy because of your long forays in the bathroom reading, playing the guitar and just dilly-dallying with your ablutions as kids? Well, now is the time you introduce her to the pleasures of mind additions while doing body subtractions!

You can provide her with rolls of Sudoku toilet paper, which allows her to solve the 9X9 logic-based number-placement puzzle to pass the time while her toxins follow the logic that they should line up and place themselves in the sanitation system of the house.

You have to consider, however, that with the Sudoku toilet paper, you are also condemning yourself to the pains of your mother when you were kids while she is enjoying the mathematical puzzle at your expense. Still, this might be one of the most enjoyable Christmas gifts for Mom!

The Thomas Alva Edison of the Home

Now, if your mother loves to invent new thingamajigs out of old, ordinary things in the house, then books on the Japanese art of unuseless things called chind?gu are a good bet. You will save money on Christmas gifts for Mom when you encourage her to putter and tinker around the house because you don’t even have to buy her expensive appliances!

Just give her the chind?gu books and she is all set to be the next Thomas Edison of unuseless things, which in the far distant future can become useless things. There is always hope for her idea of an apron with all sorts of kitchen gadgets - ladles, knives, can opener, and potato peeler, to name a few - hanging from it because she wanted everything to be within reach, literally! Shush, never mind that like all chind?gu, it made for funny and embarrassing moments.

The Epicurean of the Heart

Instead of your mother slaving over the stove for Christmas dinner, you can take her to exotic restaurants that serve good food and good drinks albeit in weird and wacky atmospheres. You might even get a pat on the back for coming up with the most hilarious Christmas gifts for Mom! You can take her to these dining establishments:

- Dog restaurants that are animal-friendly to the extreme. Your ordered dishes will be served in plates that allow for cats and dogs to eat directly from them, with chairs custom-made for the purpose! Of course, you and your mother can accompany your pets and bark and meow over the delicious food, too.

- Toilet restaurants that allow you to eat in the atmosphere of well, toilets. Just whose idea this was, you can thank him because there is something good to be said about eating poop-shaped and poop-look food while sitting on toilet bowls and eating out of toilet-shaped dishes. Whatever good that is, you decide.

Indeed, why settle for humdrum gifts when you can give hilarious Christmas gifts for Mom that will be the stuff of family legends?

Find freshwater pearl necklaces and moonstone jewelry at UniqueCollectiblesGifts.com, which are anything but blah and boring Christmas gifts for mom.

10 Christmas Gifts For Girlfriend That She’ll Love

General No Comments »

Choosing the perfect gift for your girlfriend isn’t always easy, especially when she doesn’t give you any clues as to what she might like. Whether you’re giving her several gifts or just one special gift, you want to give her something that she will appreciate and not feel like you didn’t put any thought into the selection.

Here are some suggestions for gifts that will put a smile on her face:

Two Dozen Roses – Roses are the flower of love and there’s nothing more impressive than receiving two dozen beautiful fresh roses along with a handwritten note from you.

Box of Gourmet Chocolates – Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, chocolate truffles, chocolate dipped fruit, chocolate bon bons, champagne truffles, nuts coated in chocolate, heart shaped chocolates – you get the idea.

Perfume or Perfume Set – Some good choices are Lovely perfume, Juicy Couture perfume, Paris Hilton perfume, Euphoria perfume, D & G Light Blue perfume and Happy for Women perfume.

Diamond Earrings – If she has pierced ears, she’ll love a lovely pair of sparkling diamond earrings. You need to decide on stud earrings or dangling ones. Sneak a peak in her jewelry box and see what she prefers.

Fashion Bracelet – A fashion bracelet will look great on her lovely arm and she’ll really know you care when you give this to her. Some good choices are: diamond tennis bracelet, sterling silver bracelet, gold bracelet, pearl bracelet, leather bracelet, charm bracelet, gemstone bracelet or engraved bracelet.

Spa Visit Gift Certificate – Give her a gift that will completely rejuvenate her mind and body. Send her to the spa for a day of pampering. Her stress will melt away and she’ll be in a great mood to thank you again after she returns.

Bath and Shower Set – Most women love to lather on a creamy soap and splash that smells like fruit, chocolate, vanilla or flowers. Skip the ho hum sets you find in many stores and look for something special. If the set comes in a nice box or gift basket, that’s something you should think about getting. Popular brands are Philosophy, The Body Shop, L’Occitane. English Lavender and Organic soaps are also great choices.

Magazine Subscription – If she enjoys reading magazines (look around her place and see what she likes), then this is an easy way to give her a gift she’ll appreciate. Some good choices are: Vanity Fair, O The Oprah Magazine, InStyle, Vogue, Self, Lucky, People, Women’s Health, Women’s Day, Good Housekeeping, Rolling Stone and Cooking Light.

Wooden Jewelry Boxes – Women who wear a lot of jewelry sometimes run out of convenient places to store it all. A beautiful jewelry box made out of cherry or oak wood is the perfect gift for a woman who has lots of jewelry, or is interested in starting a collection. The bigger the box, the more impessive the gift.

Silk Pashima Shawl or Wrap – A pashima shawl is larger than a scarf so it covers the shoulders completely. They are simple to wear but really elegant and classy. Pashima wraps come in many beautiful fashion colors. The best part is you don’t have to worry about size since they are one size fits all.

This Christmas Capitalise on Gifts That Won’t Break the Piggy Bank

General No Comments »

In much the same way as Britain’s summer has this year been a bit of a wash out, the economy is also looking a little bit wet and drizzly. Even if you’re not personally starting to feel the pinch, it’s not hard to see the writing on the wall; prices are increasing, the housing market is not performing nearly as well as before and there seems to be a problem with one bank after another. This being the case, it makes sense to make the most out of the pennies and invest in Christmas presents that won’t break the piggy bank after all, it is the thought that matters the most.

Indeed, there once was a time when the giving of Christmas gifts for many people was a humble affair, but that is often no longer the case for many people. Electronic children’s toys are far more expensive than they used to be, and games consoles not to mention music players - are not exactly cheap. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t plenty of fun to be had with lower-cost Christmas gift alternatives and there are plenty available for all of the family.

So, when it comes to stocking fillers, why not give an inexpensive Christmas gift that won’t just save pennies, but will also give that special person a taste of things to come. Those with green fingers may appreciate a Grow It Chilli Plants Gift Box, and camera enthusiasts may be thrilled by the Christmas Tree Christmas Pocket Photo Album; after all, Christmas is a time when people take tonnes of photographs, and whether it’s photographs of party antics, or little children opening their Christmas presents, the festive season is never complete without a collection of snaps.

But what about Christmas Gifts for her? It doesn’t matter whether she is your sister or your friend, your parent or your partner, during the season of goodwill she deserves something special; after all, not wanting to break the bank is no excuse for not wanting to try! So, if the person on your mind is the kind of girl who likes to host dinner parties, then a set of six Party Shoes Place Settings could the perfect way to spice up any Christmas Day dinner party. Made from enamel, these place settings provide three pairs of shoes for boys, and a further three for the girls double the fun for three pairs of hungry couples!

And when it comes to gifts for him, how about cufflinks? They’re not only an inexpensive way to let someone know how much you care, but they are also a great way to tie in a gift to the season of goodwill - not to mention his personality. If Christmas Trees and baubles are not quite his thing, why not instead opt for golf balls, or even Mr Tickle Cufflinks? There are even alcohol-themed cufflinks available for those men who fancy themselves as connoisseurs; the possibilities are only limited by the imagination!

Gifts for the kids could be a little trickier; after all, they may well be expecting an expensive gadget that marketing managers have prefixed with an ‘i’, or if not, some next generation games console that will have them dancing around the television which is not necessarily a bad thing, so long as they’re moving! However, the kids can have so much fun over the festive period with Christmas Gifts that won’t break even the most fragile of piggy banks, and will probably be far better for them!

Indeed, for kids who like to play games, why not get them moving with the classic game of charades? This word-guessing game has a number of vintage moves that are fun for all the family. Is it a book? Or a play? Or maybe even a television show? Who knows! It’s up to you to decide!

So, whatever the state of your finances this Christmas, relax, unwind and enjoy. The time for giving really doesn’t have to hurt!

The Secret to Finding Christmas Gifts That People Actually Want!

General No Comments »

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, sales increase dramatically in almost all areas of retail. Shops introduce hundreds of new products as people buy more and more gifts, decorations and supplies to take them through the Christmas period.

The ‘dead weight’ of bad gifts

However, despite all this mass buying of things, the huge surge in sales at Christmas time actually leads to what economists call a ‘deadweight loss’. What this means is that the overall difference between what present givers spent on Christmas gifts, and what the gift receivers would have paid for the same things, is a negative number (economists calculate that in 2001 Christmas resulted in a $4 billion deadweight loss in the U.S. alone). To put it more simply, most Christmas gifts are not as welcome as they should be!

Clutter & mess

Along with the fact that a person might not really want the carefully chosen Christmas gift being given to them, there tends to be a cost for upkeep and storage of the item – and its contribution to clutter around the household ends up being a further nuisance to the receiver.

Excess wastage

If presents end up in the dustbin then this contributes to damage to the environment. Due to the sheer scale of gift-giving at Christmas, the environmental impact is significant. Bad Christmas gifts are a burden to society.

The art of gift-giving

But it doesn’t have to be this way! While none of us needs more bland cellophaned baskets of synthetic bath bombs and bodywashes, bags of tat destined for the landfill, there really is an art to gift-giving.

It is possible to give presents which will truly be valued by your loved ones. Once you have the knack of giving the right Christmas gifts to your friends and family, you can start making a positive contribution to the spirit of giving at Christmas!

Take your time

A mad rush around the shops on December 24 may suit your hectic lifestyle, but the likelihood of finding truly ideal Christmas gifts that way is slim. Instead, in the months leading up to Christmas, take a note of the interests and hobbies your friends and family are indulging in, and consider activities they might enjoy but which they haven’t yet discovered for themselves.

Join forces

What gifts would help them achieve their goals, appreciate their hobbies or simply enhance their lives from day to day? Perhaps there is a Christmas gift which would benefit them, but which is too expensive for you to pay for. Could you join up with other members of their family or friends and pay for the item together?

Be original

If you are absolutely certain that giving the same present to a particular loved one every year will make them happy, go ahead. But most people like to be surprised once in a while! If you can find an original Christmas gift that suits a person’s character in some way then it will be a more exciting present to receive.

Useful or beautiful

Finally, take inspiration from 19th century British craftsman, designer and poet William Morris, who said: ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful’. Ask this question of each Christmas gift purchase you are about to make. If it is neither useful nor beautiful, go and put it back on the shelf!

Ideas: Most memorable Christmas gifts at almost no cost!

General No Comments »

When it comes to gifting we all think a lot. Because a gift is not just a formality, it is expression of our love.

It also says who we are. It shows how much we care for the other person.

That’s why it doesn’t matter if your gift is costly or something inexpensive.

What really matters is how much care you have packed in with the gift.

Let me give you an example:

After graduation many of my friends were leaving town. Emotions were running high and everyone was gifting each other.

I didn’t have lots of money. In fact I used to support my studies by teaching school kids.

So I decided to create a gift of my own.

I did a quick audit of what my friends like, their hobbies, the kind of career they want to get into and their role models.

Then I bought old magazines from the pavement, tore off the pages and then rearranged them.

With those old magazines I created new magazines which were created especially for every single friend of mine.

It had the articles they loved. And their own photographs. This magazine became the best gift that they got. Many of them have that magazine even today after all these years.

Here are some tips and ideas about how you can create gifts at almost no cost and yet make them memorable for your loved ones and friends:

- Make a compilation of inspiring quotations and gift it.You can also make posters of these quotations.

These posters can be customised with photographs of your friends and loved ones. They will proudly put it on the wall and your gift will remain and remind them for a long time.

- Compile a chicken soup kind of compilation especially for them and gift it.You know what kind of time your friends are going through. So you can customise it well for them. Also add your comment and it will become even more valuable.

- You know their favourite singers and artists. Why don’t you make a special CD pack for them?

This will contain all their favourite songs in one place. Use a free audio editor and also put your message in between.Don’t forget to pack it with the nice photographs of the artist. If you know little bit of Photoshop or can work on some other photo editor put your friend along with the artist on the pack and they will love you.

- Get a lot of self development audios together and create a course.

Gift it to your friends. May be your husband. It will be very valuable to them,I am sure.

- Take a high quality digital print of a great painting and frame it.

It is cherished by people. You will be referred more often in their talks.

- Make a personalised kitchen jar or a coffee mug.

Take a nice mug and print or write a nice message for your mom.I am not talking about the regular "greatest mom in the world" message. Write your heart out. Something unique for her.

- Gift them your time.

Print a cheque form from the net and instead of amount write the number of hours you are giving them. Offer to work for certain hours for the cause they are passionate about. This will be a unique gift for them.

- Throw a group movie show for your kids and their friends. You can also do this at home.

A great movie on the home theatre with friends and sandwiches makes a great occasion.

By now you know what I am hinting at.

The personalisation is the key. Make your gift unique by putting in it things which can’t be purchased in the market place.

And that’s what makes your gift invaluable!
