How to Save Money on Christmas Gifts

General No Comments »

The Christmas season is the season of giving and spending. At the same time, it doesn’t mean you have to dig a hole for yourself by financing everything on credit. Otherwise, how will you feel when your credit card bill arrives in January?

There are many ways you can avoid allowing this to happen, and here are some tips to help you avoid the debt.

Don’t go after any really big Christmas gift. Do you want to go into debt because of a single gift? Keep in mind all the other holidays ahead — birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, baby showers, graduations and more. If you spend it all at Christmas, you will have nothing left for a whole year!

You do not have to compete with friends and family to one-up them with Christmas gifts. If you allow your competitive nature to take over, you will ring up credit card bills that will give you a coronary disease a month later!

Buy only one gift for each person and set a limit on how much it should cost. If you buy a gift worth $50 for one person, and a gift worth $25 for another, you do not have to buy them two to make up the difference. It is the thought that counts, right?

Give gifts that have no tangible value like coupons for mowing the lawn or for one hour of time together.

Buy your gifts early, before the Christmas shopping season takes hold and prices begin to rise. If you can, shop in July and you can reap the financial benefits of people trying to get rid of merchandise during this slow period of the year. Do not buy things at the last moment, unless it is a clearance sale.

Shop on-line because the amount of merchandise is often higher in terms of quantity, and lower in terms of price.

Bake your gifts. This does not mean sticking that sweater in the oven, but making fudge, cookies or pies for a Christmas present. It may seem like a cheap way to go but people love sweets.

Stop buying wrapping paper every year, and just use decorative Christmas bags you can purchase once and re-use for years on end. If you are really trying to save money, wrap the presents in newspaper.

Other options for saving money during the Christmas season is to let friends and family know you are trying to save money, so they do not expect too much. As well, you could get a part-time job to bring in some extra money, or sell some of your old junk to second hand shops.

Christmas can be a fun time, even on a budget, so don’t worry about spending less this year.

Should I Buy This Year’s “Big Gift” For Christmas?

Uncategorized No Comments »

The “big gift” of the year is a Christmas gift announced on television that excites all kids to want it that year. Every year, this “big gift” is announced, and parents are urged by their children to start beating each other over the head to buy it. This is a scenario played out every single year, and each year it seems to get worse.

Is the fighting and inflated prices really worth the big toy of the year? Should you go out and battle others just to get a doll or an action figure?

Absolutely not. Fighting each other for the big toy of the year goes against everything that the Christmas season stands for. Why would you allow yourself to fight against others in a toy aisle, just for the opportunity to pick up a toy your child will probably stop using by March anyways?

Not only does fighting for the big gift of the year violate the Christmas message, it is also a cheap way to go in terms of buying a gift. If you are just going to buy the easiest gift (to choose) for your child rather than putting thought in it, then it is not worth the effort.

There have been many different gifts over the years that have made parents fight each other — Tickle-Me Elmo, Ferbies and Cabbage Patch Kids to name a few, and every year a new gift comes along to replace the old ones. It is a lot of heartache and pain for a one-time reward.

Instead of going after the big gift of the year, find your child something that they can use for months and years after they get it. Buy them new clothes, a sled for those winter mornings that have just had a new snowfall, or get them something to nurture their minds and imagination.

Don’t just get the one gift everybody wants — be unique and think about what would really benefit your child. A Tickle-Me Elmo may be a gift your child wants, but getting them something that forces them to use their mind at an early age will give you many more rewards.

When the list of the big toys for the Christmas season comes out, do the best thing you can and that is throw it away. Forget about it and make your own list of the toys and items that your child will not only love, but get great mileage out of and, in the long run, reap much more benefits out of it.

Don’t fall into the “big gift” hype, it will only give you bruises.

How To Find The Perfect Christmas Gift For The Man On Your List

Uncategorized No Comments »

As the Christmas season draws near, now is a good time to start thinking, preparing and shopping for gifts. Shopping for a gift for a man doesn’t have to be difficult when you plan ahead.

Buying a gift for a man can be a lot of fun when you consider what he would really likes, wants or needs. The first thing to do is to make a list of his likes. Does he enjoy sports; does he have a favorite team? You may want to consider the amount of sports memorabilia he currently has and think about whether he really wants more of the same. Another thing to think about is what kind of hobbies he enjoys. If he spends a lot of time working on things he has to do and little time on a hobby he has had for years, then renewing the ability for him to enjoy his hobby again can be a rewarding gift.

Another thing to think about when shopping for a gift for a man is what he wants. Men are so busy working and doing projects around the house that they forget about themselves. When you consider what he may want you should take your time. Try thinking about his wants and desires, not from your point of view but from his. What kind of things did he enjoy before life got so busy? Are the things he does regularly the things he enjoys most and how can you work them into a great gift? Finding a gift for a man based on his desires will make him smile every time.

After you have thought of his likes and wants try to consider what he could use or needs. Try to solely consider his needs when thinking of a Christmas gift based on needs. Maybe he spends every weekend doing yard work and enjoys doing so, then instead of having to spend the next season raking the leaves a powered leaf blower may be a perfect gift. Try to consider a gift for enjoyable use or even ones that will save him time or effort.

Buying a Christmas gift for a man can take extra effort but be very pleasing to both you and him. Taking the time to think of gifts based on his likes is a way to ensure he will be overjoyed when opening his gift. Trying to consider the things he wants and desires as apposed to others ideas will make him feel special and aware that you listen to him well. Considering what he needs may help locate gifts that will help him finish tasks easier and have more leisure time for the things he truly enjoys.
